Hello all,

I'll be travelling to the hills of Ojochal (near Uvita) in October and staying there for a month or two. I will need internet and phone access. I've figured out that ICE's prepaid SIM is cheap to use there, and at $.26/minute to Canada not too expensive to make international calls.

My main dilemma is internet access. Our house does not have WiFi. Does the prepaid SIM give data access? Is it unlimited? Would i be able to put it into my unlocked Blackberry 9700 and tether to my laptop?

Is anyone living (or will be travelling to) Ojochal before October 2011? If you can check whether 3G works there would be great. contact me for exact place lyphe365@hotmail.com.

thanks all!

well, if they don't already have phone service they have the unlimited plan which i love. i used my phone a Windows Mobile 6.1 as a Modem, but it was a pain to set up, I also used an iPhone as a modem, but in the end, I got a datacard and a $30/mo service and liked it a lot, I was travelling a lot, too, sometimes certain places have bad service, i usually got 1mb download but .3 or so upload which was acceptable, good luck! If they have a landline in their home, getting a modem/router with laptop probably better way to go, I didn't have one and travel a lot so I LOVED my Datacard, in fact I have it with me now...

I'm researching issues related to connecting a notebook computer to the internet on behalf of my Tica god-daughters, whose family just got a Kolbi plan for their Nokia phone.

I'm planning to buy the girls a notebook computer so they can have a larger screen size than the Nokia and begin learning about computers. I was just on the GrupoICE.com website looking for information on related issues direct from ICE but (as usual!) few "detalles" available there!

I'm assuming that, if their Nokia can connect to the USB port on the notebook I get, that would be the cheapest option; as, I'm assuming, both it and the phone would then have access via a single "illimitada" plan. Only drawback of this method would be that the Nokia would be tied up whenever the girls are online which, realistically, I think would become a problem!

So, I'm leaning toward getting them the ICE "Data Card" device instead, which plugs into the USB port and provides internet access. I'm assuming this means there would then be two Kolbi plans in the house; one for the Nokia, another for the Data Card.

I've seen prices on the internet for renting these ICE "Data Cards," but am sure these prices are higher than what we'd need to pay, since their use would be under a year-plus ICE contract. But, on ICE's website, I can't find info either re: pricing of illimitada plans for the Data Cards or other related points.

Can anybody help re: pricing and availability of the Data Cards and their plans? Also, anyone with experience connecting a Kolbi phone to a computer thru the USB, would be interesting to hear from. Thanks!

Hi, not sure what you mean by cut the sim properly, it's an AT&T phone that's jailbroken and unlocked, right? If not that could be your issue! Sorry for the delay

Hello Nio, thanks for the excellent information on the ICE situation in CR. We plan on relocating to CR to attend Language School for a year, starting in January of 2012. I will also need to keep working, meaning - reliable access to the web and as reliable of a cell phone connection as I can get. What would you recomment for a Cell Phone? Should I bring an iPhone 3G, or possibly a CrackBerry? Do you know if it's possible to purchase a BlackBerry there (I know it's expensive - bummer) and be "legit" on the ICE/Kolbi system? I like the email capabilities of the CrackBerry, which I also use in Honduras. We currently live in the States & could likely get whatever phone we need before heading there. We'll also be there (CR) for the month of July of this year - so I need to figure this out.. Thanks in advance for your advice -

Hey Travis, thanks for this post,

I am a pro poker player currently living in Tamarindo. I need to ensure the internet doesn't go out by having 2 internet lines, one being the local cable service and I was hoping the other would be the cellular via my iphone through ICE. Unfortunately I have broadband 02.10.04 which seems to be impossible to unlock via my research. Also how can someone that is only on a tourism stay in Costa Rica get a data plan? Do they sell these via your sim card? I asked about a USB plugin device and the answer is you must be a resident to obtain such a thing.

Any help is much appreciated!
